How to Become a Master Gardener


Master Gardener Training

Contra Costa Master Gardener training will be offered in Antioch in the fall of 2007. Enrollment for this class is now closed.

How do I apply to the program?

Applications are accepted from July - September 8th. Interviews are conducted during September, and acceptance notification is made by September 30. All successful applicants must have fingerprinting background clearance in order to start the training.

Where is the training held?

For 2007: in Antioch at the Contra Costa County Fairgrounds, 1201 W. 10th St. Antioch, Ca 94509.

How long does the training last?

Classes start on October 11, 2007 and will end on February 14 , 2008. Classes start at 10am, and finish at 3pm with a 45 min. lunch break. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.

Tuition?

A $175.00 tuition fee is due with the application. This fee, payable to UC Regents, covers the cost of the training manual, name badges, class supplies, and speaker fees. Scholarship opportunities may be available. Call for more details.

The Commitment

After successfully completing the course, the new graduate is required to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours on approved CCMG projects within the following twelve months. 26 hours are required staffing the Master Gardener Advice desk, with the remainder on projects selected by the applicant. Approved volunteer work may not start until the initial training is completed.

How do I qualify to be a Contra Costa County Master Gardener trainee?

This program is designed for residents of Contra Costa County. Master Gardeners are people who come from all walks of life. Adults of all ages, gender, ethnicity and backgrounds may apply. Horticultural experience is helpful, but not mandatory. Volunteers should be enthusiastic, willing to help others, and have a strong love of continued learning. Certified Master Gardeners are official representatives of the University of California Cooperative Extension.
