After completing the course, newly certified Master Gardeners are required to volunteer a minimum of 75 hours in the first year, at least 24 of these hours will be spent in answering horticulture calls and visitor inquiries at the Cooperative Extension office (Monday - Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m). The remainder of the hours will be worked on other public education projects such as Our Garden (our community demonstration garden), our annual Fall Event (garden walk or symposium), farmer’s markets, or school gardens.
In subsequent years, in order to remain within the program, 24 hours of volunteer work and 12 hours of continuing education are required annually.
Classes are taught by experts ranging from UC faculty and staff, local horticultural educators, and Certified Master Gardeners.
